If you have visited my blog before, you might remember Nikki surprising Matt (and me) with the news of her pregnancy during their family session with me last fall. Or perhaps you remember seeing their maternity pictures a few weeks ago. Today, friends, it is finally time to meet the little peanut! Quick recap- Nikki is my god-sister, and even though she was delivering in Augusta (2+ hours away from me), she asked me to photograph the birth, if at all possible. Matt and Nikki decided to keep the gender a surprise, and there was nothing more that I wanted than to be IN that room when "peanut" was born and we finally found out boy or girl! Luckily, Peanut cooperated and I got the call that Nikki was having contractions on a Sunday night when my husband was home with the kids, and my mom started making the drive to our house to cover the kids the following day.
I got to Augusta around 9pm on Sunday night, and although Nikki's contractions were consistent and fairly strong, she was only about 2 cm dilated. We all settled in for a long night ahead of us. Nikki had chosen a birth plan that did not include medication, and I was so proud of how strong she was all. night. long. Throughout the night Matt, Nikki's mom, and I took turns massaging her back during contractions, and although Nikki and Matt kept apologizing to me that I was awake with them all night, there is honestly no place I would rather be! It is such an honor when someone trusts you enough to invite you into their birth space. That is an honor I don't take lightly.
By the next morning, contractions were definitely more intense, and Nikki tried several different positions to try to relieve the intense back labor she had been experiencing since the beginning. Finally, just before 9am, Nikki's ob arrived and it was time to push! I cannot say enough good things about the nurses and doctors that Nikki had throughout the night and during delivery. They were so sweet and encouraging, and completely respectful of her wish to deliver naturally. I also have to brag on Matt. He was amazing throughout the entire laboring process, and was the rock that Nikki needed him to be during delivery.
One final push at 10:18am, Dr. Morgan held up Peanut and asked Matt to announce that peanut was a....BOY! Hampton Isaac Steelman, 7 lbs 15 oz, and 20.5 inches of pure perfection!
I am so proud of Nikki, and I am so in love with my new god-nephew (I know that probably isn't a real thing, just like god-sister isn't...but I am totally making it a thing! So, Hampton, Auntie Kim loves you!)
